Many jails across the nation have become overcrowded, making them hot spots for COVID-19. There, social distancing and other preventive methods against the virus just aren’t realistic. Mass incarceration has been a driving factor leading to the crisis in our justice system today, and although some cities and counties have taken crucial steps to limit arrests and shrink their jail populations, more work is needed to avoid further exacerbating this pandemic.

This afternoon, the Safety and Justice Challenge hosted a Twitter Chat to discuss how people in jail are one of the most vulnerable groups during the COVID-19 pandemic, and how rethinking the use of jails can protect those inside our justice system and in our communities. Check out these eight questions and what everyone said.
