100&Change Finalist Briefing Call

This week, the MacArthur Foundation announced the finalists for 100&Change, a competition for a single $100 million grant:

We then hosted a briefing call featuring representatives from the four finalist organizations, and MacArthur’s Cecilia Conrad kicked it off by talking about the 1900+ proposals submitted, the semi-finalists, and the finalists:

Here’s a look at how the finalists described their challenges and solutions on the briefing call:

Catholic Relief Services

“We know that almost all children in orphanages, 80 to 90 percent, have living parents. Most often, it’s poverty driving these families apart…we are committed to informing the public about these issues so that we can redirect donor dollars toward a long term solution that supports families.”–Shannon Senefeld, Catholic Relief Services

“Two billion people worldwide currently suffer from a lack of vitamins and minerals…Our solution, the process of biofortification, is the process of breeding these much needed vitamins and minerals into everyday food crops.”–Bev Postma, HarvestPlus

Rice University

“Nest 360’s goal is that a baby born in Africa has the same chance of survival as one born in the United States.”–Rebecca Richards-Kortum, Rice 360 Institute for Global Health

Sesame Workshop and International Rescue Committee

“There is no greater global problem than the refugee crisis at the moment: 25 million refugees and asylum seekers, 40 million internally displaced. And there is no more vulnerable group among that population than children.”–David Milibrand, International Rescue Committee

“Our partnership [with the International Rescue Committee] harnesses the unique strengths of both organizations to deliver early learning and nurturing care at mass scale.”–Sherrie Westin, Sesame Workshop
